The Herald & Devoy Story
Why Herald and Devoy? Devoy Barracks, close to the hotel, were named after John Devoy who was an Irish rebel leader. He gave over 60 years of his life to the cause of Irish freedom.
And Herald? When Devoy moved to the US he worked for the New York Herald newspaper. So the name is a fusing of those two elements.
Want to know what he looked like? A statue of John Devoy was erected in Poplar Square in the middle of Naas. Devoy supported the 1921 Anglo Irish Treaty and the formation of the Irish Free State during the civil war. He died in Atlantic city in 1928. His body was returned to Ireland where he was given a state funeral.
